A good writer VS a competent writer
Thursday, August 8, 2013 • 2:03 PM

Maybe it's because I've been spending a lot of time on the Internet lately but I am confused and disillusioned by the things that people write on social media. I was going to write a post about how people do the weirdest(stupidest) things on the Internet but then I decided that I'm not prepared to offend half the people I'm online friends with.

As someone who writes a bit and reads more of others' writing I do wonder what makes a good writer. I know a lot of competent writers. They have good grammar, solid vocabularies and write clearly. Their blog pages are almost artifically cheery and positive, lacking in emotional depth and they always look excellent in every photoshopped photo they puts up of themselves. Basically they are really boring. They are uninteresting because they don't question important issues and are more interested in portraying a polished image of themselves. I wonder whther they realise that that makes the experience of reading their blogs much like watching a play in the theatre. While the reader is engaged somewhat he is constantly aware that the construct is not real. And also nobody is going to believe that a teenager can be so put together and collected. But perhaps this is precisely what explains a teenager's desire to present to the general public a version of himself that is better than what he is.

I've always thought the best writers possess one or more of the following qualities: An ability to effortlessly inject humour in their writing, write in a very politically way about something that is many people's pet peeves, or to write in a way that allows the reader to experience the emotions in the writing/of the writer.

I think many people don't try to be good writers anymore. They just want to be entertaining. I'm not saying that being aa good and entertaining writer are mutually exclusive ideas but I do think it's farily obvious that people my age are more interested in writing about he superficial, or writing in a superficial way than anything else.

I think my pessimism is due to how this post come at a time where I'm not sure what being a writer means anymore in a time where the written word is becoming increasingly under-appreciated. But I am hopeful that in time I will find a purpose in writing that I am both comfortable with and proud of. I hope everyone has a good weekend!:)
